Learning Guitar Starts Today
If you want to learn how to play the guitar, then it starts today, not tomorrow. I have met a lot of people over the last 5 years teaching the guitar, and one of the biggest problems I have found with many people is the decision to actually get started. I think the reason that so many people meet with me but don’t make a decision to learn guitar and get started is that sadly they do not think that they can do it. It is very difficult for me to help others to learn the guitar if they themselves do not even think that they can do it.
Lets take this one step further, say that you think you can learn to play the guitar and you want to start right now! This is great because you and everyone else can learn to play guitar and music. This is big so I am going to stay here for a second and elaborate what I mean. If one man or woman can do something then so can you! That statement right there is so powerful and I hope that if you learn one thing from me it is that you too can achieve anything that you want to, especially if someone else has done. Now are you going to be able to do it as fast as them, are you going to have the same desire as them… Probably not, however that is a result of their unique life circumstances.
The Importance of Believing it is Possible
In one of my other articles I mention the importance of obsession and not being afraid to fail or make a mistake. Often times these people who do these amazing things, or those people who can play guitar with ease, have been doing it a very long time. You often do not see the countless hours of practicing that goes into them getting as good as they got. So I am here to tell you that you too can learn the guitar, but you have to start today and you have to make a decision and a commitment to do it. Will you be the next Stevie Ray Vaughn? It’s possible, but you have to love the guitar and the learning process just like he did and keep going no matter how tough it gets!
If you have realized it by now, I am providing you with my opinion in what I think is possible for you with guitar and music. I Know that there are many of you out there that think that you are too old, or that your hands are to small, to big, to fat, to skinny, etc, etc. But at the end of the day where are those excuses getting you.
I am not saying these things to invalidate what you are saying because I know what it is like to have insecurities just like you but the core argument I am trying to make is that if you want to learn guitar is that you need to stop making excuses and go buy one and take some lessons, or you can learn online. I would recommend you learn online later so you don’t develop any bad habits but as long as you pay attention to your technique you will probably be okay
Nothing is stopping you
There is literally nothing stop you from learning to play guitar or doing anything else for that meaning. If you don’t know what to do just get started. The universe has a curious way of helping you to get what you sincerely want. Or at least that has been my observation. But you have to truly want this! I can not want this for you and chances are you will quit in the first 6 months of your guitar learning journey. It is so sad, and it makes me angry with how many people come to me saying they want to learn the guitar. They get started and maybe a month, or two in, guess what… They quit.
So I am going to warn you right now… Learning the guitar in the beginning is not easy, it wasn’t meant to be easy, however, if you can just take a deep breath, tie a rope around yourself and just hold on for the first 6 months and keep working at it, then you will get results.
Guitar is nothing like Piano or the other instruments in the sense that it can be painful, especially in the beginning as you are having to stretch your fingers, and you also have to develop calluses on your figure tips. You are playing with the most sensitive part of your fingers against steel wires that are sharp enough to cut. Let me let you in on another little secret about learning to play the guitar… It gets easier after those first 6 months, sometimes 12 months depending on your motivation level. But I guarantee you that if you can get through this first initial gauntlet of your guitar playing you are golden because it gets easier!
